Greetings, earthlings

On starting fresh

I've always struggled with something of a "cobbler's children have no shoes" problem with my own website, in whatever form it's taken over the years. The challenge for me has always been twofold: that I've been building websites and applications as a profession for twenty years now, so much of my motivation for maintaining my own presence gets sapped by that, and also that I've always felt a little like I didn't really have enough to say that would warrant the burden of doing it at all.

Things have kind of changed, regarding both of these points.

I love building things. I love seeing code turn ideas into things I can interact with. I love making music, and I love writing, and tinkering away on things, and solving problems that I discover, experimenting, sharing ideas. I don't want to split these things down the middle any more. I don't want to be drained empty by what I do, for the sake of my mental health, which has reached some low points over the last couple of years, if for no other reason.

So early this year I started taking steps to remedy that, in the hope that I could start finding a better balance between the various facets of my life, of engineer, artist, husband, friend, upright-human-being.

MIDIpad is the first fruit of these labours, and certainly not the last.

Now I'm most certainly not in a position of not having enough to say. I want to talk about all of it. Share the experiences of the building of the things, of the art and craft of it. Share my work, my own music, my own videos, my own experiments, and nurture it all and watch it grow.

Well, here goes. Deep breath now.

Hello world.
